Born from innovation
In 2021, Luci invented the idea of Biomotion lighting during her study at TU Delft; an innovative way to increase bicycle safety. The idea was patented immediately and with the successful crowdfunding campaign Ziemi was born.
Douwe and Luci are two young enthusiastic entrepreneurs with a view to social interest: contribute to road safety. With the strong cooperation with all users, the entrepreneurial duo can make the joint mission a reality!

Waarom Ziemi en de Fietsersbond samenwerken
Veilig fietsen lijkt vanzelfsprekend.

Frequently asked questions

Ziemi doesn’t light up the road ahead of you, but rather the cyclist’s moving legs. This makes your Biomotion (your human movement) visible, causing other road users to automatically be more alert and cautious.
With standard bicycle lights, it is important that the light has a wide beam angle to ensure a clear view of the road ahead. If such a bicycle light were to be turned upside down, this would not only dazzle you, but it would also obstruct the view of other road users. Ziemi has been carefully designed to illuminate only the cyclist’s moving legs.
No, the Ziemi is not intended as a replacement for your traditional front light. It remains important to use a standard front light to ensure you can see the road clearly and are visible from the front.
Ziemi is a supplementary light that makes your moving legs visible from the front and sides, making you more recognisable as a cyclist and safer in traffic.
The Biomotion Rear Light has a two-in-one function. It acts both as a traditional rear light and as a light that illuminates your legs.
Reflectors definitely improve visibility and are compulsory on every bicycle. However, reflectors work reactively. This means that light must first hit them before they become visible. Consider a situation at a roundabout: if you’re approaching from the corner of someone’s eye, the light hits the reflector too late.
The Ziemi ensures that you are constantly visible and well-lit whilst taking part in traffic. It is precisely in the corner of the eye that you now stand out, thanks to a larger illuminated surface area and your recognisability as a person.
Nee, deze samenwerking hebben we alleen met de Nederlandse Fietsersbond.
Experts on Ziemi
Once I started testing it, I got excited
"At first I was a bit sceptical: the flashy presentation, the trendy box, the slick videos. But once I started testing it, I got excited. I was more visible, visible sooner, and visible from more angles."

Being seen better and sooner can make cycling safer
"For ten years now we've seen an alarming rise in the number of cycling casualties in our hospitals. Among cyclists, severe brain injury is the leading cause of death. Being seen better and sooner in traffic is one of the (obvious) interventions that can make cycling safer, fast. This fine Dutch invention is starting to change that."
Gerard Tertoolen
Traffic psychologist
Ziemi is great for car drivers
"You're clearly visible, and drivers see a person instead of a small light. That's a relief for motorists. The benefit is greatest at close range, because that's when you can tell what the other person is about to do. A cyclist can make unexpected movements, and a light like this lets you spot them sooner."
TNO
Scientific Research
Ziemi's lights make you visible over 52% sooner
"Because the light illuminates your moving legs, your biomotion, you're easier to see. TNO research confirms it: Ziemi makes you visible 52% sooner and recognisable as a cyclist 24% sooner."
