Winter time leads to more accidents: Luci (26) comes up with the breakthrough in bicycle safety.

The clock will soon be set back by an hour, and we will be cycling more often in the dark. Whether you go to work early in the morning or come back from football in the evening, the dark roads make traffic more dangerous - especially for cyclists.

Traditional bike lights fall short, especially on the sides, where 71 percent of accidents occur. Something had to be thought of for that, thought Delft student Luci (26).

From childhood dream to innovation

As a child, Luci already dreamed of becoming an inventor. With Ziemi - innovative bike lighting that illuminates your moving legs - she is making that dream come true. The idea for this revolutionary bike lighting originated a few years ago at the TU Delft. Version three of the wildly popular bike light has now been launched, a model that easily clicks onto any bike. "It's time for real lighting," says Luci.

Traditional lighting falls short

Bicycle lighting is mandatory and essential for your safety. However, the technology has remained unchanged for a hundred years, despite the fact that traffic has become more hectic. 71 percent of accidents happen sideways. "This needs to change," thought Luci. Together with Douwe, she developed Ziemi, unique lighting that makes the cyclist's moving legs visible from the side. With this lighting, you are up to five times safer on your bike.

During her studies, Luci focused on making e-bikes safer. This led to the idea of Biomotion bike lighting: Ziemi illuminates your moving legs, making cyclists instantly visible in the dark. Your brain recognizes a cyclist faster when you see moving legs. This immediately gives the warning signal: 'watch out, there's someone cycling there!'

Safe and reassured feeling

With encouragement from her teachers, she further developed Ziemi during the YES! Delft program and managed to obtain a patent. Through a successful crowdfunding campaign, she raised 36,000 euros, which allowed the product to be launched. Following a new round of investments in April this year, including support from the mobility family Pon, Ziemi is ready for significant growth.

Luci: "One response that stuck with me was from a mother who let her two sons cycle to school alone for the first time. She said that Ziemi gave her a sense of reassurance because she knew her children were highly visible. 'Normally, I take them to school by car,' she said, 'but now I feel comfortable letting them go, because I know that other road users can see them much better."

Safe in the winter

"We want to change the standard for bicycle lighting and contribute to a world where cyclists can safely ride in the dark," says Luci. Ziemi offers a safe and reassuring solution to the dangers in traffic and makes a difference. Take a look around tonight: are cyclists really visible in the dark?"
